PVC and composite decking may seem similar, but they’re actually very different.
Composite Decking:
- Made from a blend of resins, recycled plastics, and ground wood fibers.
- The core is a mix of various wood types and recycled materials.
- Ends of boards should be sealed, but seals eventually fail, letting in water.
- Wood and plastics expand at different rates, often causing splitting at the ends.
- Most warranty issues occur with composite decking.
PVC Decking:
- Made entirely from recycled plastics consolidated into a resin core, then wrapped.
- Contains no wood, so it doesn’t absorb water or expand unevenly.
- Leads to fewer warranty claims and better durability.
- Downside: PVC expands and contracts more in hot weather, so correct gapping during installation is crucial.
In summary:
Composite = natural look, higher chance of splitting.
PVC = more stable and water-resistant, but needs careful installation.
