We just had a huge storm in Washington state, which can make having a generator on hand essential. When the power goes out, it can be a scary time for your family. As electricians, we know home generators can be a life-saver. Here are some generator options which can keep the power on in an emergency.
MULTI-FUEL GENERATOR
A multi-fuel generator you can pick up at Costco for a few hundred dollars. It has a manual transfer switch that goes that goes into the house.
You can get through about a night, maybe a day and a half if you had a combo between a propane tank, which is literally the same propane tank that you use from your grill or, or filling it up with regular unleaded gas as well. Now, one of the issues with this is it will sit in the carburetors because you don’t use them, and they are going to start to have issues.
So you need to make sure you’re maintaining it yearly so that way when the big storm hits, you don’t pull the generator out and have issues.
AUTOMATIC TRANSFER GENERATOR
Another option is an automatic transfer generator. So you have a generator that sits at your house. The power goes out, the generator uses natural gas, automatically turns on.
BATTERY BACKUP
The newest option that’s becoming very popular is battery backup.
And battery backup’s gonna last you anywhere from a day to five days. If you have solar, that’s a benefit. You can charge batteries with generators if you want to, so the generator’s not sitting here running all night. All of these are options. That way when the next storm hits, you’ve actually got power in your house and you don’t have to throw all this stuff in the refrigerator away and you can take a hot shower and you’ve got heat.
