Before the transformation began, this Sammamish backyard featured an aging and deteriorating wood deck that was no longer safe or functional. Over the years, exposure to the region’s damp, temperate climate had taken its toll—Sammamish experiences frequent rainfall, high humidity, and cool winters, making untreated or older wood especially vulnerable to rot and decay. This deck was no exception.

As seen in the photos, the original structure showed significant signs of wear:

• Rotting wood along the ledger board, which posed a serious structural concern.
• Splintering deck boards and loose railings.
• An awkward layout with limited weather protection, making it unusable during much of the year.

The homeowners wanted more than just a replacement—they envisioned a space that would seamlessly extend their indoor living area to the outdoors. Their goal was to create a multi-season retreat, one that provided comfort, shade, and shelter year-round. The solution? A gable-style patio cover paired with a custom composite deck designed to handle the Pacific Northwest’s wet climate with ease.

Composite decking was the ideal material choice for this project. Unlike wood, it resists moisture damage, mold, and fading—ensuring long-lasting beauty with minimal maintenance. It also adds a sleek, modern look that complements the home’s style and natural surroundings.

Once demolition began, the scope of the project truly came into focus. The original structure had to be completely removed—including rotted framing and failing ledger boards—which revealed just how necessary a full rebuild was. But in typical Pacific Northwest fashion, December in Sammamish brought cold, rain-soaked days, turning the backyard into a mud pit and making progress difficult. Still, our dedicated team powered through.

Laying a Solid Foundation
With the old structure gone, we started fresh:

• Poured all-new concrete footings, ensuring long-term stability.
• Installed a custom-engineered beam system to support the weight of the expansive new patio cover and deck.
• Careful attention was given to every measurement and anchor point, setting the stage for precision throughout the rest of the build.

Raising the Roof—Literally
Next came the stunning gable-style patio cover:

• Featuring open vaulted framing for height and style.
• Integrated skylights to maintain natural light from the home’s rear windows.
• Framed with heavy timber and securely anchored for long-lasting structural performance.

Crafting a One-of-a-Kind Composite Deck
With structure in place, the team shifted focus to the surface:

• Installed TimberTech composite decking, a durable, low-maintenance choice perfect for Sammamish’s wet and moss-prone climate.
• The centerpiece? A custom inlay of the Yin and Yang symbol, a highly detailed design challenge that required expert-level precision, creativity, and patience. Our team rose to the occasion, delivering a flawless artistic finish.

This phase of the project was a testament to skill, endurance, and craftsmanship. What started as a soggy demolition site quickly evolved into a structurally sound, visually stunning outdoor living space designed for multi-season enjoyment.

What began as a vision to extend indoor comfort into the outdoors is now a show-stopping outdoor living space—one that’s become the talk of the Tree Farm Neighborhood.

The completed project features a stunning gable-style patio cover built with exposed cedar beams, tongue-and-groove ceiling panels, and elegant black hardware accents. Skylights were integrated directly into the ceiling, flooding the space with natural light while maintaining weather protection. For chilly Washington evenings, we installed Bromic outdoor heaters and ceiling fans to regulate temperature and airflow year-round.

At the heart of the structure is a custom-built outdoor fireplace and entertainment wall—complete with a mounted TV and expansive stone hearth. It anchors the seating area with warmth, ambiance, and visual appeal, turning the deck into a true outdoor living room.

The deck itself, constructed from durable TimberTech composite, showcases an incredible feat of craftsmanship: a fully inlaid Yin and Yang symbol framed by a curved composite border. This artistic element required precision, custom framing, and heat bending techniques, pushing the limits of what composite decking can do—and the results speak for themselves. To complete the deck, ResCom Railing installed sleek black cable railings that provide a striking contrast against the natural wood surroundings.

Electrical work, handled by Rock Electric, included:

• Recessed lighting
• Ceiling fan installation
• Outdoor heaters
• TV and AV support

Every detail of this project was thoughtfully executed to ensure the space is not only beautiful but fully functional for multi-season enjoyment.
